Setting the Scene

Background

The University had a committee in place to assess research leave applications. It had a very low refusal rate, however, there were a lot of problems:

  • Deadline driven
  • Staff were being chased too much
  • Reports were late or fragmented
  • Used too much paper and time
  • Trust issues

Objectives

  • To improve the system through which academics apply for research leave and to waste less time and money

 

Outcomes

Process Improvements

  • Decided to scrap the Research Leave Committee as it was deemed superfluous
  • Improved application system

Quantitative Benefits

  • 6,000 sheets of A4 paper no longer printed and distributed
  • Released an estimated 4 weeks of staff time (to the value of £2000)
