Our Lean Practitioner training is offered on two levels: Foundation and Advanced. Foundation Level training comprises a theory programme, a practical programme, and an experience-building programme. Advanced Level Lean training is also available for those who have completed their Foundation Level training with St Andrews Lean, or who have suitable equivalent experience.
Your Lean training begins with two days of theory training. Much of the same content is included as in our Introduction to Lean, however, with the benefit of more time, we are able to delve much deeper into the topics.
Day one will focus on the origins of Lean, Lean basics, Lean championship and strategy, and a number of the lessons learnt from over a decade in Lean in the higher education and service sectors. We also devote a large portion of the day to learning the important tools and techniques necessary to run a Rapid Improvement Event effectively. These include such things as: Kipling Checklist, ease-benefits analysis, RRS analysis, and process mapping.
On day two the emphasis will be on understanding the St Andrews Process Improvement Model and your role in it as a facilitator. Each of the eight steps will be covered in great detail, and we’ll look at who and what is needed in each step, how long it should take, and which of the tools we learnt in day one apply. At the end of the day there will be a short-answer assessment to evaluate your learning so far. On successful completion of the assessment, you will be awarded a certificate of attainment, endorsed by St Andrews Lean Consulting and the University of St Andrews.
After completing your theory training it is time to put it into practice. This session usually runs the three days immediately following Part 1, meaning you get to apply your knowledge straight away.
We organise a simulated Rapid Improvement Event around a process that all of the attendees have either been a part of or will be familiar with (e.g. invoice processing or recruitment). Initially, attendees take on the role of RIE team members, getting a feel for what it is like to be a part of the redesign process. As the days progress, however, practitioner-trainees are expected to take on a leadership and facilitator role.
The RIE is run in the same way as if it was redesigning a real process, which involves current state mapping, waste identification and removal, and ideal and interim future state mapping. All of the tools and techniques that are covered in Part 1 will be useful for this exercise, although not all of them will be employed. Your performance throughout the three days will be continually assessed, and successful attendees will be awarded with a certificate of attainment, endorsed by St Andrews Lean Consulting and the University of St Andrews. Furthermore, at this stage in your training you will have satisfied the requirements for “Lean Practitioner” under ISO18404. Should you wish to gain endorsement through the Royal Statistical Society, as assessors of ISO18404, you will be well prepared for their assessment.
