BOSCARD is a tool used in scoping meetings, which aim to determine whether the investment of resources in redesigning a specific Lean project is required and to determine the way forward via asking the following questions.

 

  1. Why do we want to do this piece of work?
  2. Where does the process we are talking about start and finish?
  3. What do we hope to achieve?
  4. Who do we need to involve?
  5. How long will it take?
  6. When are we going to do it?

 

BOSCARD enables a constructive approach for answering the above questions and allows group agreements when determining what the problem that requires change is. In addition, it allows a means of creating structure when discussing the project as well as quickly delivering all essential project information to stakeholders in a clear, digestible format.

So how do you use BOSCARD? Let’s break down the elements of BOSCARD into followable steps:

 

Background = Providing background information including the reasons for creating the project in addition to mentioning the stakeholders who will benefit from the project.

 

Objective = Outline the project goals.

 

Scope = Describe in detail the features and functions that characterise what the project is supposed to deliver.

 

Constraints = Identify the main restrictions/challenges of the project.

 

Assumptions = Note all of the determined factors of the project. During the planning stage of the project these assumptions will be validated.

 

Risks = Outline the risks/constraints and assess the significance of each risk and how these can be addressed.

 

Deliverables = Outline the deliverables the project is aiming to produce in order to meet the outlined objectives.
